Individuals who’ve seen the HBO show that tells the story of Chernobyl from moment 0, will be aware that the roofing of the atomic plant had been the most dangerous place on Earth as a result of exorbitant radiation it emitted. Just two minutes of exposure into the region could cut an individual’s life expectancy by 50 percent. Through time, the threat has been reduced substantially, and even though there’s still a limited area that covers approximately 1,600 square meters, there are visits to the surrounding cities that needed to be abandoned prematurely: deserted lawns, an entertainment park at ruin, decrepit college classrooms… it’s a ghost city. Thus, is there now a location where radiation levels are much more harmful for humankind? It appears so, and it’s in the Pacific Ocean.
As per a recent research project, conducted by the University of Columbia, there are signs that there are regions of the Marshall Islands which would be the most radioactive on the planet. The researchers found high levels of radioactive components like americium, cesium and also two kinds of plutonium 38 in various soil samples obtained from 11 distinct islands.
The maximum dose was on Bikini Island, in which the United States ran the largest hydrogen bomb test ever. The components mentioned above were involved from the Chernobyl accident and immediately affected over 30 individuals, who died a week later as a result of acute radiation illness. But despite that very low amount, it’s believed that tens of thousands have been affected
What percentage of substances has been discovered on the islands?
Following americium-241 evaluations, researchers discovered that specific islands contained much higher amounts of the isotope than those located in Chernobyl in 2009. They also revealed that Bikini Island comprised around 1,000 times more plutonium than has been found in Chernobyl or even Fukushima (the Western plant in which an earthquake triggered a nuclear disaster in 2011).
In another study, investigators discovered that fruits on a few of the islands comprised more cesium-137 than permitted by international security standards.
Finally, researchers determined that the four northern islands (Runit, Enjebi, Bikini and Naen) gave away more pollution than regions near the Chernobyl power station. Even though there aren’t many people living there, researchers warn that local residents should exercise caution.
